On line 119, column 21 /span>

This year, Ramadan started on Sunday, March 10th, and will end the night of Tuesday, April 9th. In Islam, Ramadan is considered the holy month of fasting. During the period of Ramadan, people of Muslim faith will fast during the day and gather during sunset to pray and break their fast.

“Ramadan for my family means more family dinners for the most part. We’re all going through this together when it comes to fasting, so at the end of the day we’re all eating together which makes every night feel special,” BCC president and member of MSA, Muhtasim Sagiv, explained.

Traditionally, many will break their fast with specific foods that have significance within the culture.

“There’s a couple specific foods we have, like dates, that we break our fasts with,” Sagiv shared.

Surrounding Ramadan are values of honesty, humility, and kindness. During the holy month, it is very common for people to spend more time with their friends and family.

“The first night of Ramadan is always special because we usually cook a little more that night and celebrate that together, but every night after that is so special too,” Sagiv said. “The whole idea of Ramadan is being humble, kinder to the people around you, and more aware of your surroundings, so I do find that I spend a lot more time with my family,”

“

Ramadan, from a historical context, has kind of always existed in Islam. The main idea of the holiday is to focus on humility and grounding yourself, part of it is being able to empathize with people who are less fortunate,”

— Muhtasim Sagiv

After Ramadan has ended, the celebration of Eid al-Fitr commences. Eid is comparable to the extension of Ramadan, where all people of Muslim faith gather together to celebrate the end of the holy month of fasting and charity.

“Eid is almost an extension of all the time I’ve spent with my family over Ramadan. I get the opportunity to see so many people throughout my community that I don’t get to see as regularly; aunts, uncles, and family friends,” Sagiv explained. “Everyone will make some kind of food at their house and we’ll go across to their houses all dressed up and say hi.”

Eid starts with a morning of prayer and giving, many people will go to the Mosque and partake in charity work.

“The morning specifically is very important because everyone goes to the Mosque to pray. My dad and I will typically go and hand food out in the mornings, which is always nice,” Sagiv said.

A large part of Eid is enjoying many cultural dishes with friends, family, and community members.

“Throughout the day I’ll have close to six meals from just visiting everyone and spending time together,” Sagiv shared. “Typically we’ll end the night with a meal at our house or a family member’s house with all my close friends and family.”

A common misconception about Ramadan is that it is a holiday strictly about fasting, but there is much more historical context than that.

“A lot of people think all it is is not eating and drinking during the day, but a big part of it is not being mean to others and trying your best to spread kindness. Generally, it’s always been about bettering yourself and being spiritually closer,” Sagiv explained.

Learning and respecting other cultures is of great importance, especially at North Penn. During Ramdan, it is important to acknowledge how and why people are fasting.

“Being more aware of different cultures is always a good thing. For people who are fasting, if their friends are aware they can help make it a more welcoming environment for them to fast and express their faith,” Sagiv said. “Again, a big part of Ramadan is being kinder, so if your friends can find value in what you’re doing, you can almost share that experience with them.”

One of the best things you can do to support someone who’s fasting is to learn and appreciate why they are doing it.

“You don’t have to apologize for eating or drinking around people who are fasting, it’s not like just because we are fasting we expect everyone else around us to not eat,” Sagiv shared. “There’s no reason to feel bad, you just need to show respect.”

As children grow older, the focus of Ramdan shifts, and children are able to value the importance of the holiday.

“My view on the holiday has kind of evolved over time. When I was younger, I only fasted for a couple days just to see if I could do it. It changed a lot for me with age because as I got older I understood that this is something that is important and helps me feel at peace with myself,” Sagiv explained. “Being able to take on this challenge is more than the challenge itself, but being able to grow and become stronger as a person. I approach it as a month for me to grow as a person, rather than just looking at it as fasting.”

https: |

On line 170, column 21 eason.

“I spent 36 years in the military, been around the world, seen some cool things, seen some bad things, and I have experienced a lot. If I went into the classroom as a social studies teacher, I would have to take everything I have learned in the military and put it in a little jar up on a shelf,” SMSgt Robert Storm explained. “I could pull it out once in a while to share some things, but if I can come back as a JROTC instructor and still wear my uniform in a classroom environment, I can tell people every day the things that I have experienced, where I’ve been, how I’ve dealt with it. It was a better fit for me to [do this] than to be a social studies teacher.”

North Penn’s new JROTC teacher Senior Major Sergeant (SMSgt) Storm experienced many of life’s unexpected turns, which led to so many experiences that have shaped him into who he is today.

“I graduated from Boyertown in 1987 and I joined the service in December of my senior year,” Storm stated.

Following his graduation, Storm attended 3 formal military training schools before being deployed.

“I went to basic training for six weeks in Texas. Then I went to Shinute, Illinois for Life Support training, now known as Air Crew Flight Equipment. After that, I went to Combat Life Survival in Spokane, Washington. It is three weeks of living off the land, basically camping,” Storm explained. “Then I went through a prisoner of war camp for about 48 hours. Then I went down to Homestead, Florida for water survival for about a week. There we learned about if you had to ditch in the ocean or bail out, and how to survive there in a liferaft. Then I went to my first base in Germany for [about] 3 years,” he continued.

Even though this seems like a semi-straightforward process, this beginning alone was a curveball.

“I did not know I was going to Germany,” Storm continued. “When I found out I was still in Shinute, Illinois they said “Hey, Airman Storm, congratulations, you are going to Bitburg.” and I was like “What state is that in?” and they said, “Yeah, that’s not in a state. You are going to Germany.””

Although this was not originally Storm’s plan, it turned out to be a great experience, mainly because of the events going on overseas at the time.

“[When I was deployed] the Cold War was still going on so there was still East and West Germany,” Storm stated. “I got to see the fall of the Berlin Wall and go to Berlin when the wall was down, but they still had checkpoints Alpha and Charlie. It was a great time to be over there.”

Although the name suggests differently, the majority of Air Force members are on the ground and work to get the plane in the air safely.

“I started as an airman, learning my job. The one thing that I always got to do in my career field was instruct aircrew for water survival, land survival, and how to deal with the equipment we have,” SMSgt explained. “I was always a “support person”. Very few people in the airforce fly, but there are a lot of people on the ground that are responsible for getting the airplane up in the sky.”

Like anything else, the military is organized by rank and as you move up, your position and responsibilities change as well.

“Originally, I was with F15s and then I was with a KC135 air refueling tanker unit which had a crew of 3. My particular job was to make sure the plane was safe with the equipment on board for it to get off the ground,” Storm stated. “It was just a constantly growing experience of learning how to do things by doing them wrong.”

“After I served 4 years in the military on active duty, I started going to college. So when they were talking about Europe I had a deeper understanding of [the history],” Storm explained. “When I finally settled down and went to college, I was way more focused. I was there to get an A when I showed up to class. I started at a community college in Arizona because that’s where I ended up after [my deployment] in Germany. I went there for two years and then I graduated from Ottawa University [with my teaching degree].”

Teaching, like going to Germany, was not always in the plan, however, it opened up new doors to a life SMSgt would have never lived.

“I never knew I wanted to be a teacher. Most great teachers are born wanting to be a teacher, I didn’t know that. I was forced into teaching aircrew to use equipment, and when I started doing it, I found out that I enjoyed it,” he stated.

While in college, SMSgt was also a part of the National Guard, which he joined immediately after his time in active duty.

“I joined the National Guard right after I got out of serving active duty. Those 10 years while I was [in college and eventually] teaching, I was always in the guard, one weekend a month, two weeks a year,” Storm stated.

“After 9/11, I had the opportunity to return to the guard as a full-time member. In total, I have 36 years in military service, but for the final 22 years, I was in the National Guard as my 9-5 job,” he continued.

After fully retiring from the military, Robert Storm was set on becoming a social studies teacher, until a couple of his friends brought a new idea to light.

“About 8 years ago, two of my friends who were already JROTC instructors said “Hey Sergeant Storm, we know you have a teaching degree, and you want to teach, but have you ever thought about JROTC,” and I have never thought of that,” Storm said.

Not only did the military guide Sergeant toward his future, but it also allowed him to see the world.

“I always wanted to travel, and when I joined the military, I got to travel. I’ve been from Norway in the north, all the way to South Pole Station, Antarctica in the south. And I’ve been from Guam in the East, and if you go all the way west and back around, I’ve been to Turkey,” Storm stated. “Everywhere I went, I got paid to go. There are places I went that I worked a lot, but on my time off, I was on vacation.”

For Storm, traveling opened up so many opportunities, and his biggest piece of advice is for people to branch out, and do the same. It doesn’t have to be the world, just go explore.

“Get out and travel. If there is a mountain 2 miles to the east, go on the other side of that mountain because you don’t know what’s over there. And when you get to that mountain, if there’s another mountain, go see what’s on the other side of that mountain.”

Other than allowing Storm to explore new horizons, the military taught him so many lessons that he is forever grateful for.

[In the military], you can learn a lot, and you can get a better perspective of the world if you travel, and meet the people that live there. I was getting on-the-job training for dealing with things around the world because I was there. I had a real broad perspective of the world when I came back,” Storm explained. “When you go in the military you don’t just deal with people that live in Lansdale or Montgomery County, you deal with people from everywhere. I got to meet cool people and hear different perspectives, that you [otherwise] would only read about. I got some on-the-job training of the world just by joining the military.”

Although Sergeant Storm wouldn’t change his experiences, there is one thing that he wishes he would have done differently, that he learned later in life.

“In the military, we would always have groups come out to do a tour [of our facilities]. I always told them ‘If I could go back in time, I wish I would have done better in school.’ I was not the best student because I didn’t know how to use my brain, which I learned in the military.”

Home means something different to everyone. For some, it is a person. For others, it is a feeling. But by definition, it is a place where someone permanently resides. This is the definition that North Penn’s new JROTC SMSgt Storm resonates with most.

“In closing, I lived in Europe for a total of five years, and I lived in Arizona for the last thirty years, but Montgomery County has always been my home. Yes, Arizona is beautiful, but home is always home and when I decided to retire, I wanted to come home.”

https: |

Are you interested in pursuing a degree or career in sport management, sports marketing, or sports medicine? Don’t know how to move forward? North Penn’s course and sports teams are available to you!

The Knight Crier is running a recurring feature on specific classes, clubs, and people to reach out to help students furthermore unravel their interests and achieve their educational/career goals after high school. In this installment, we will cover what opportunities North Penn has to offer for students interested in the various types of careers in sports.

Elective Classes

Athletic Training is a class that focuses on identifying injuries, conditioning tactics, and rehabilitation techniques. Students will have the opportunity to go on the sidelines of games to watch and/or help the athletic trainers, giving them a real-world experience. Any student interested in pursuing a career in athletic training, physical therapy, or any area of medicine should look to take this course.

Coaching/Officiating is a new physical education class coming to North Penn next school year. It will provide students with the opportunity to not only learn the rules of the game, but all the facets involved with being a coach, such as goal setting, the coaches’ various roles, ethical conduct, and coaching youth sports. With the wide variety of sports available at North Penn, you could learn how to officiate many different sports such as football, tennis, lacrosse, etc. After successful completion of this course, students can find coaching and/or officiating positions and volunteer opportunities.

Sports & Entertainment Marketing is a semester course that splits its classes to cover both sports and entertainment marketing. This course covers how to market a team to a specific city or fanbase. Students have the opportunity to create their marketing strategy for a sports franchise. There are various technologies and simulations that students will use to further their understanding of marketing a sports team.

Clubs

Managing an NP Sports Team

Every team is always looking for more help, recruiting students as team managers. You can contact any of the coaches or our current athletic director Mr. Berger. Students could get real hands-on experience with whatever sport they chose to further their understanding of the sport and what it takes to help manage a team.

People to contact

Mr. Kyle Berger

Mr. Berger is the interim Athletic Director and can help you find any sports team who may need some extra help or a manager. If you intend to go into the sports world, managing a team is a way to further your experience and add to your resume.

Mr. Christopher Frey

Mr. Frey is the current head of student activities and runs the CHIP program at North Penn. The CHIP program is available to all students and can be done during the school day or outside of school. Students have 3 options to choose from: Internships, field trips, and academic connections. The Proving Grounds in Conshohocken are always looking for volunteers and interns to help out with tournaments for the various sports that they offer.

https: |

On line 324, column 21 /span>

5. Who Really Cares- TV Girl

For those of you who don’t know TV Girl, they are a band that has taken the world by storm. They’re known for their upbeat. 60s bubble gum pop-inspired beats mixed with their melancholy lyrics. Many of their songs have become famous on TikTok making their popularity skyrocket. Who Really Cares truly expresses what it means to be in a relationship filled with toxicity, sadness, and intimacy. It also gives a strange feeling of nostalgia when listening. The most popular songs on the album are Not Allowed, Cigarettes Out The Window, and, Taking What’s Not Yours. This album is for you if you’re into soothing yet sad music. Overall, I give this album of 8.5/10.

4. Orquideas- Kali Uchis

This album just released in January, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since. Kali Uchis is known for her beautifully written lyrics that mesh well with her pop-esque and girly sounds. She has been taking her artistry to the next level repeatedly and is only continuing to do so. Uchis uses Spanish Lyrics and Latin sounds to further tap into the rich culture and to illustrate the extraordinary experience of being a woman of color. She explores the ideas of romance, heartbreak, and loneliness in almost all of her albums, but Orquideas in particular truly captures those ideas. Some of the best songs on the album are Te Mata and Igual Que Un Angel. I would rate this album an 8.5/10

3. Immunity- Clairo

This has to be one of my favorite albums of all time because it truly explores teenage sadness. Clairo is a singer who has been around since 2016, and she is most recognized for songs such as “Pretty Girl” and “Flaming Hot Cheetos” which were both viral hits at the time. She’s usually known for her bedroom pop type of sound, but with Immunity, she changes it up, tapping into multiple different genres. Some being soft rock and electropop. Her quiet and soft singing also evokes a sort of calmness, even when she’s speaking on the saddest topics. My favorite tracks on this album are Softly and North. I would rate this 9/10.

2. Igor- Tyler, The Creator

Tyler, The Creator has been a prominent figure in rap music for a very long time. Igor is simply one of his most iconic albums because it explores themes of jealousy, heartbreak, and of course, sadness. His lyricism is truly immaculate and gut-wrenching. This album can be a lot so if you’re sensitive to this I wouldn’t recommend this. But overall it is one of my favorite albums. Some songs that I recommend are Igor’s Theme and Are We Still Friends. I would also give this album a 9/10.

1. Heaven Knows- PinkPantheress

Heaven Knows is not only my favorite album but also my favorite piece of media ever. PinkPantheress is also one of my favorite artists. PinkPantheress started as a normal teenager making music on SoundCloud but has since become a prominent name in modern pop culture. She is known for her cute but electric sounds, but yet at the same her music is strangely depressing. Heaven Knows just released in November, and Pinkpantheress has already improved her sounds so much more. You may know her for her viral hit Boy’s A Liar, which is also on this album. Heaven Knows also features some prominent names in pop music right now, such as Ice Spice and Central Cee. My favorite songs on this album are Feelings and Another Life. This album is a 10/10.

https: |
